instituto béradêro
This social project aimes to develop the self-esteam of children and teenagers of Catolé do Rocha by teaching them the culture of northeastern Brazil. Chico César founded the instituto béradêro in 2001 together with his former music teacher at the school in catolé do rocha, irmã Iracy.
the story began in 1996 when irmã Iracy had the idea to integrate children of several schools in the region of Catolé do Rocha to give them lessons in music - instruments and theory. more than 200 kids showed up at the first meeting at Colégio Francisca Mendes, a school which had been founded by german nuns who had to emigrate during the Nazi regime in Germany. Little by little the kids formed a group singing an playing the flute and rehearsing for their first performance which took part in 1996. they felt they were doing something that other people could enjoy. In 2000, two young music teachers from fortaleza started coming once a week to Catolé do Rocha giving lessons for transversal flute and violin. at this point chico césar decided to support the project and transformed it into a NGO. the project received a vacant building in the city which was almost completely devastated. the search for sponsors and partners to reform the building was quite sucessful: today theInstituro Béradêro has instruments for a whole orchestra, a completely reformed building and teachers coming from the Federal University of Joao pessoa to give classes for many different instruments.
But it is not only music that children can learn at the Instituto, but dance classes and handcraft lessons as well. It is a great opportunity for the younger people to aquire skills that they can later use in their professions. None of this would have been possible without irmã Iracy and chico. and of course all the people who believed in the project from the start.
