In the sixties, in a Latin American seaside resort.

Juan Ludz, 17, an adolescent in acute conflict with his father, wants to prove the existence of life after death. In order to do this, he prepares a photographic experience which would reveal the existence of the human soul.

He then meets Ana, his first love. Prompted by passion, they decide to make a public demonstration of Juan's experience, where Ana's face is supposed to be reproduced in a halo of light. The challenge, however, is too strong for her: during the presentation, Ana, already suffering from some mental trouble, has a nervous fit.

Her parents decide to place her in a psychiatric hospital.

Some time later, Juan visits Ana and tells her of his intention to run away with her. Free, at last, they pass their first and last night together, in the course of which they each take a pill which supposedly would deliver them from the weight of their present life, and permit them to meet again in paradise. Juan's last image of this special night is that of two nurses transporting Ana's lifeless body.

Twenty years later, Juan wakes up on board the plane which takes him to his sick father. On the spot, he discovers that Ana is still alive and married. He begins looking for her, but on his way, he encounters Lilith, a beautiful young woman who wakes up in him Ana's souvenir and a desire long asleep. Juan follows her, and without exchanging a single word, they make love in an abandoned building.

Only then does he find Ana, who refuses to speak to him.....
