During a routine police sweep of São Paulo streets, Pixote, an abandoned ten-year-old boy, Lilica, an effeminate youngster and another youth Diego, are taken to a juvenile detention center where they quickly begin to learn the basics of survival in the face of police brutality, rape and murder. Aided by Dito, an older, almost desperately macho teenager who becomes Lilica's lover, they manage an escape from the center and resume their lives of petty crime. Dito makes contact with Cristal, a drug dealer who commissions the gang to make a cocaine delivery in Rio. They botch the job but steal enough money to buy the rights to an aging alcoholic whore named Sueli who becomes mother and lover to the boys. They set her up as a decoy and casually mug her customers at gun-point, moving irrevocably from petty crime, to violence, and finally, murder. Marilia Pera is known as an accomplished dramatic stage actress though her most recent roles have employed her talents as a comedienne. A fine singer and dancer as well, she began her careeer in various stage productions such as My Fair Lady, Irma La Douce and Hello Dolly before moving into major dramatic roles on the Brazilian stage. Her first starring role was Polly Peachum in Three Penny Opera, she starred in Pippin in the role created by Ben Vereen, and she was Kate in The Taming Of The Shrew. Among her awards are Best Actress citations for her work in 1969 in the stage production of Leilah Assumção's Speak Softly Or I'll Scream and for her creation of Miss Margarida in the 1973 world premiere production of Miss Margarida's Way by Brazilian playwright Roberto Athayde.
