Tertuliano's career begins in the São Paulo of the 20's. Engaged to Aninha, he leaves her at her parents's plea, since she suffers from a heart murmur. Their correspondence will last for the rest of their lives. Later, at his mother's advice, he starts visiting three wealthy marrigeable heiresses and courts the younger of the three, while at the same time living it up in the city's night life.
He has an affair with Pupi, the night queen. He quarrels with the first heiress, gets involved with the second one, while exploiting Pupi. He starts to drink, them marries the older of the three sisters, and his involviment with both her and Pupi lead to tragedy. He ends his life as a lottery vendor while he reminisces on his good times as king of the Night Life.
