___José
Leonilson Bezerra Dias was born in Fortaleza, state of Ceará,
Brazil, on 1 March 1957.
___In
1961 Leonilson moved with his family to São Paulo. He enrolled
in the Licenciatura em Artes Plásticas course of the Armando
Alvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP) in 1977, attending classes taught
by the artists Nelson Leirner, Júlio Plaza and Regina Silveira.
During this time he shared a studio with the artist Luiz Zerbini.
___In
1979 he participated in his first collective exhibition, "Desenho
Jovem", in the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade
de São Paulo. He dropped out of the course at FAAP in 1980
and in the same year he took part in the show "Panorama da
Arte Atual Brasileira/Desenho e Gravura" at the Museu de Arte
Moderna de São Paulo.
___His
first trip outside Brazil took place in 1981. In Madrid Leonilson
realized his first solo exhibition at the Galeria Casa do Brasil.
He visited various European cities. He participated in the exhibiton
"Giovane Arte Internazionale", Galleria Giuli, in Lecce.
___In
1982 he returned to Europe and traveled through Italy, Germany and
Portugal. He gave a solo exhibition at the Galeria Pellegrino, in
Bologna.
___He
realized two solo exhibitions in 1983, in São Paulo, at the
Galeria Luisa Strina, and in Rio at the Thomas Cohn Arte Contemporânea.
He met Leda Catunda. He traveled to Paris in 1985 to participate
in the "XIII Nouvelle Biennale", and visited Milan and
Bologna. He traveled to Buenos Aires to participate in the exhibition
"Nueva Pintura Brasileña" at the Centro de Arte
y Comunicación and met Daniel Senise. He participated in
the XVIII Bienal International de São Paulo and met German
artist Albert Hien. In the same year he gave solo exhibitons at
the Galeria Luisa Strina. Thomas Cohn Arte Contemporânea and
at the Espaço Capital in Brasilia.
___He
traveled to Europe in 1986 and exhibited with Albert Hien at the
Galerie Walter Storms in Munich. He took part in the colective exhibitions
"A Nova Dimensão do Objeto" at the Museu de Arte
Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo and "Transvanguarda
e Culturas Nacionais" at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de
Janeiro.
___In
1987 he traveled to Europe, and for the first time to New York.
He exhibited solo in "O Pescador de Palavras" at the Galeria
Luisa Strina, "Moving Mountains" at the Kunstforum, Munich,
and at the Usina Arte Contemporânea in Vitória, state
of Espírito Santo, Brazil. He participated in various collective
exhibitions such as "Modernidade", at the Musée
d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and at the Museu de Arte Moderna
de São Paulo.
___In
1988 he gave a solo exhibiton, "O Inconformado", at the
Thomas Cohn Arte Contemporânea. He went to New York, Paris,
Berlin and Amsterdam and participated in various collective shows:
"Albert Hien/Leonilson" and "Seven Artists on Invitation"
at the Pultizer Art Gallery in Amsterdam; "Brazil já",
at the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen, at the Galerie Landesgirokasse
in Stuttgart, and at the Sprengel Museum in Hanover.
___In
1989 he traveled to Europe and New York. In the same year France's
Ministry of Culture commissioned various artists to do a commemorative
engraving for the 200 years of the French Revolution, among them,
Leonilson. He gave solo exhibitions "Leonilson" at Galeria
Luisa Strina; "Nada hás a temer" at the Gesto Gráfico
in Belo Horizonte; and "Bombeiros não são corruptos"
at the Espaço Capital. He particiapted in the exhibition
"Panorama da Arte Atual Brasileira/Pintura", at the Museu
de Arte Moderna de São Paulo.
___In
1990 he went to London (twice), New York, Paris, Venice and Amsterdam.
He began to record tapes, registering ideas, having a book project
in sight. The unfinished project became a diary.
___Solo
exhibition at the Pulitzer Art Gallery. He received the Prêmio
Brasilia de Artes Plásticas at the Salão Nacional.
___In
March of 1991 he began the illustrations in the weekly column of
Barbara Gancia in the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, continuing until
May of 1993. He traveled to New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. In
August a test revealed that he was HIV positive. he participated
in the exhibitions "Viva Brasil Viva" at the Liljevalchs
Konsthall in Stockholm and "Brasil la Nueva Generatición"
at the Fundación Museo Bellas Artes in Caracas.
___In
1992 he organized the exposition "Um olhar sobre o Figurativo"
for the Casa Triângulo gallery in São Paulo. He traveled
to Amsterdam, Munich, Paris and New York. He participated in the
colective exhibitions "X Mostra de Gravura Cidade de Curitiba/Mostra
América", at the Museu de Gravura da Cidade de Curitiba
and "Pintura Brasil Década 80", organized by the
Itaú Galeria, and realized a series of 7 drawings entitled
"O Perigoso".
___In
1993 he exhibited in solo at the Galeria São Paulo and at
Thomas Cohn Arte Contemporânea. He participated inthe traveling
collective exhibition "Cartographies"
of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg.
___Leonilson
created his last work, an installation in the Capela do Morumbi,
São Paulo, but never saw it put up.
On
May 28 he died in São Paulo.
___In
1994 there was a posthumous recognition and the Prêmio APCA
from the Associação Paulista de Críticos de
Arte, for his big solo exhibiton at the Galeria São Paulo
and for the installation at the Capela do Morumbi, both in São
Paulo in 1993.
___In
1995 the show "Leonilson: São
tantas as verdades" took place at the Galeria de Arte do
SESI in São Paulo accompanied by a publication bearing the
same title. The curator of the show, Lisette Lagnado, authored the
first work to be written about the artist".
___In 1996 various collective and solo
exhibitons took place in Brazil and in other countries, among these
were: "Projects: 53, Oliver Herring and José Leonilson",
at MoMA, New York, "Leonilson: São tantas as verdades",
at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro and "15
artistas brasileiros", at the Museu de Arte Moderna de
São Paulo, in 1997, at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de
Janeiro and the Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia.
