Inside Out

Inside Out: Underwear and Style in the UK is the name of the timid exhibition, the Design Museum shelters on half of its third floor. The baroness Helena Kennedy, one of the promoters of the show states: "many people see the British as reserved and somber". Inside Out is a powerful weapon which we can use for challenging this perception."

It's worth to say, before anything else, this small charming space is located next to the Tower Bridge - London's post card - in front of Tames and next to cinematographic restaurants as expensive as attractive. Besides that, the museum store is literally a doom because, as its own name already says, design is what matters there.

The collection of pieces to wear under clothes (at first...) isn't bulky, but very interesting when choosing the tackled subjects: The bohemian look of Virginia Bates; the "artistic" corselets of Vivienne Westwood, the perversion look from the brand Agent Provocateur signed by her son, Léo Corré and Serena Reess; The abundance and tradition of Marks and Spencer, responsible for 43% of the British underwear sale, which offers 70 different models just in white panties; the Underwear Objects from Seymour Power - prostheses for enlarging "everything" ! These are some of the small universes which the exhibition reveals.

And talking about "enlarging", there is a cabin where the visitor can try on several Ultrabra's Super Boost - choosing the size which better suits them. There, we can find the manufacturer's guarantee (Gossard) written: "Your bigger and better cleavage, never seen before, or your money back".

The interesting image selection of contemporary stylists which makes us to see how the underwear is read and re-read by Alexander McQueen, Arkadius, Antonio Berardi, John Galliano , Stella McCartney, Hussein Chalayan, among others.

More creations from designers and brands are found on two "clotheslines" of pieces vacuum packed. Between them, the trend panty in pink tulle with colorful polka dots and embroidered is signed by Clements Ribeiro - the Anglo-Brazilian couple who makes much success over here.

The Design Museum's has just one call and truly "hides" the English underwear. But the institution announces the exhibition will cross-seas, after its conclusion in London, on 16/07/2000.
