Born
in Egypt, in 1926. He studied cinema and dramatic art in
the Pasadena Play House. Alvise Orfanelli, pioneer in cinema
in Egypt, opened the doors of production to Chahine. He
made his first film, Baba Amine, twenty-three years
ago, in 1949. Two years later, with Le Fils du Nil,
he took part for the first time in the Cannes Film Festival.
In 1979, he was awarded the Golden Bear and the Grand Jury
Award in Berlin, with Alexandrie Pourquoi, first
part of his autobiographical trilogy that was to be completed
with Alexandrie Encore, and Toujours, from
1990. He has a solid career with 34 films including Destiny,
selection for the 21ª Mostra.
