Thirty-five years ago, Mexican director Arturo Ripstein made his first film, Tiempo de Matar, as from a novel by writer Gabriel Garcia Márquez. In his new production, once again he was inspired by the magic and allegoric realism of Márquez.

The Colonel waits. Every Friday afternoon, he gets ready and awaits the arrival of a letter to advise him of the retirement he was promised. Everyone knows that this wait is in vain, even he himself, but he cannot admit this. Nothing else remains for him.

There is hunger in his house. He is ashamed of his poverty and of the situation of his wife, debilitated through lack of food and by asthma. Categorical as he is, he answers his wife with hard words every time she asks him what they are going to eat.
