Born
in Mexico, in 1943. He grew up in a world of cinema owing
to his father's profession as film producer. He was assistant
director to Master Luís Buñuel, in his Mexican phase, with
El Angel Exterminador and Simon del Desierto.
He directed his first feature, Tiempo de Matar, in
1964. His most recent films were: Mujer del Puerto
(1991), Princípio y Fin (1993), La Rena de la
Noche (1994) and Profundo Carmesí (1996, selection
for the 21ª Mostra).

Thirty-five
years ago, Mexican director Arturo Ripstein made his first film, Tiempo
de Matar, as from a novel by writer Gabriel Garcia Márquez. In his new
production, once again he was inspired by the magic and allegoric realism
of Márquez.
