A
disconcerting and intense first film by the twins Dominik and Benjamin
Reding, following the trajectory of a boy in a crisis of identity. He
is in search of his masculinity in a world where all of the male standards
have been lost.
Janosch
is tired of his life with the family, impatient to prove that he is now
a man, and he seeks out his former school friend Koma. He must base himself
on a model, and Koma - now a skinhead, although with no clear vision of
what this might, in fact, represent - is happy to have an admirer, someone
who will follow him. Koma transforms Janosch into a replica of himself.
When
Janosch, however, meets Zottel, a stranger, proud of being leftist, he
romantically changes position and arouses Koma's wrath. The consequences
are tragic. Lyrical, but frightening, the film provides evidence of homophobic
violence. It is also a technical tour-de-force with a fine sound track
and black and white photography that evokes the beauty and balance that
Janosch seeks, and the cruelty he will encounter.
