Documentary
on the prisoners forced to clean out the gas chambers in the concentration
camp of Auschwitz during the Second World War. The frightening images
are seen through the eyes of three men from Salonika, Greece whose family
members were interned in European concentration camps, but that miraculously
survived.
The
film tells the story of Morris, his youngest brother, Shlomo, and cousin
Dario, who were taken from Athens to Auschwitz in April 1944, on a journey
lasting 11 days. On arrival at the camp, they were assigned to work in
the gas chambers, cremating the cadavers.
They
could also have been killed for having been witness to crimes against
the Jews, but were liberated at the end of the war. They are returning
to Auschwitz for the first time since they left the camp in 1945, and
they tell of their experiences on site.
