Fourteen year-old Siddharta lives in Rome with his mother Silvia who doesn't work and lives by her wits, relationships and friends. His father Massimo, an experimental film director, helps them out the best he can. Silvia had a second child, Domitilla, from an affair, now over, with Roberto, the only one with a normal job, and the backbone of the family.

Domitilla has been living with her father, but at Christmas she moves to her mother's and lives another life, totally without limitations alongside her brother, Siddharta. Theirs is a very deep relationship.

One afternoon, while Silvia is out, Domitilla rummages through her mother's make-up bag and finds a syringe. Accidentally she pricks herself. Siddharta confronts the situation, the fear of death, and life without involving grown-ups, all the while trying to protect his mother.
