Between 1913 and 1920, a number of films were produced in Italy that were strongly influenced by the ideals of black Romanticism: beauty always collied with pain; illness with sensuality; and love qith death.

In a matchless style, the Italian film diva reshaped the concept of the sexually liberated womam that had been so popular in the decadent arts of the previous century. But her ode to unconditional passion could not go unpunished before the eyes of the cinema audience.

A calvary of loss, guilt and self-torment was an inevitable fate in these stories. She played the dolorous diva, the diva dolorosa. In Diva Dolorosa the director's aim is to compose, with fragments from Italian diva films from the second decade of the century, a dramatic insight into the desires and passions of their female protagonists.
