A
simple story, based on day-to-day life for young people in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Life is complex for Rustem and Miko, just as it is for any other youngster.
Love between them is tragic, as is so often the case in youth.
The
film is an endeavor to understand this youthful universe and to show that
almost nothing is any different about "being 18" today. Three days in
the life of Rustem and Miko, from August 31 to September 2, are shown
in four episodes.
Rustem
is lazy and indifferent, in contrast to his competent, hard-working sister.
He is indifferent even to the director of the Zoo who takes it upon himself
to dismiss him from work. He then starts on an empty routine, wandering
about the city with no destination. One day he comes upon Miko, a well-mannered,
charming girl. Her refinement will set the tone to their budding romance
that tosses Rustem into the grips of a whirl of feelings. Not much is
known about Miko's life, who her parents might be, or how much she earns.
Her solitary trajectory, however, and her yearning for love are touching.
Rustem and Miko try to discover the world for themselves and record all
in words and in drawings.
