Third
part of film director Pablo Cesar's trilogy consisting of Equinoccio (El
Jardín de las Rosas), filmed in Tunisia, and Unicornio (El Jardín de las
Frutas), filmed in India. Set in the heart of black Africa, in an ancient
village where time appears to have stopped still, the film is entirely
played by black actors/actresses (from Mali and Argentina).
The
script is inspired in Greek mythology, as from the version by Hesiod in
his Theogony, and transports the goddess Aphrodite to Africa. She was
born from the genitals of Uranus, mutilated by his youngest son who cast
the organs into the ocean.
All
of the gods await the birth of Aphrodite, born from the union of Uranus's
genitals with the waters. The next day, the Zephyrs find a naked boy asleep
by the sea. Enchanted with the boy, they decide he is Aphrodite and lead
him to the gods. Aphrodite seduces the gods Hermes and Dionysius who never
for a moment question her sexuality. And thus, to satisfy them, Aphrodite
bears them seven children.
