Having made 52 films working as an actor, Antonio Banderas decides to tell a story from his own point of view as from the book of the same name by Mark Childress. The plot weaves together two different worlds: the modernity of Los Angeles and conservative Alabama. This is a story of a woman, a boy, and an Afro-American community - all of them struggling to survive in a hostile environment, each, however, in his own way.

It is summer, 1965. A boy in Alabama by the name of Peejoe, is about to be initiated into adult topics such as freedom, women's rights, and racial prejudice. The catalyzing element for this transformation will be his Aunt Lucy, a glamorous and eccentric woman. She is running away from her husband on her way to Hollywood to try and make her dream of becoming a TV star come true. She is the one to give the lad a new vision of the world.
