Documentary
that follows along with the process of creation in The Summer of Kikujiro,
by Takeshi Kitano, also presented at this 23rd Mostra. Steering clear
of the clichés in making publicity films (narration, quick editing, and
insertion of scenes from the film), director Shinozaki Makoto observes
Kitano in documental form in an endeavor to bear vivid witness to the
work of the Japanese film maker. Makoto filmed over 100 hours of images,
showing a film maker who is part of every detail of his production (acting,
directing, editing, and music) and that, at times, is so very uncompromising,
yet amusing with his collaborators. Makoto also allows himself to be taken
by chance, as from the unexpected visit from Hou Hsiao-Hsien (Taiwanese
film maker, of Flowers of Shanghai, selection for the 22nd Mostra), who
met with his friend in an editing room to talk of cinema.
