| Markku Lehmuskallio was born in 1938 and became a forest ranger in 1963. At that time, he had developed an interest in photography. He was encouraged by a friend to buy a 16mm camera and began to make documentaries for Finland TV together with Anastasia Lapsui. She was born in Jar Sale, Russia, in 1944. Between 1966 and 1992, she worked as a radio journalist and also wrote stories for newspapers and magazines. Together, the couple made Paradise Lost (1994), The Farewell Chronicle (1995), Anna (1997), The Sacrifice – A Film About Forest (1998, screened at the 23rd Mostra), Seven Letters from the Tundra (2000), and Mothers of Life (2002).
