Born in Nebraska, USA, in 1961, of Greek ancestry, Payne majored in Cinema from the UCLA Filmschool in 1990. Since then, he has worked as a scriptwriter, producer and director. His highlights include Citizen Ruth (1996), Election (1999) e About Schmidt (2002), for which he won the Golden Globe award for Best Screenplay.
