Born in Bangkok, Thailand in 1970, Weerasethakul majored in Cinema from the Chicago Art Institute, and since then has directed several films and videos. His first feature film, the documentary Dokfa nai Meuman (2000), was screened at various festivals worldwide and was greeted with enthusiasm by the critics. Tropical Malady gave the young filmmaker the Grand Jury Prize at the 57th Cannes Festival in 2004.
