REGULATION

THE 29TH SÃO PAULO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL WILL BE HELD IN SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL FROM OCTOBER 21 TO NOVEMBER 3, 2005. THE FESTIVAL IS A CULTURAL, NON-PROFIT EVENT, HELD BY THE ASSOCIAÇÃO BRASILEIRA MOSTRA INTERNACIONAL DE CINEMA AND RECOGNIZED BY THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE ASSOCIATION OF FILM PRODUCERS. THE STATE AND MUNICIPALITY OF SÃO PAULO ESTABLISH OCTOBER AS THE OFFICIAL MONTH OF THE FESTIVAL. THE 29TH SÃO PAULO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL WILL INCLUDE THREE SECTIONS: INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE, SPECIAL SCREENINGS AND THE NEW FILMMAKERS COMPETITION – A COMPETITIVE SECTION FOR FILMS BY NEW FILMMAKERS (WITH FIRST, SECOND OR THIRD FILMS).

INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE

  1. To be eligible for the INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE section of the 29th. SÃO PAULO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, the film must meet the following conditions:
    •  Produced after January 2003
    •  35mm, 16mm print or HDCAM.
    •  Feature or short film
    •  Not previously shown in Brazil
    •  There is no regulation regarding theme or category.
    •  Subtitled in Portuguese, English, Spanish or French.
  2. The deadline of the selection is August 12th. 2005. A preview VHS* videocassette or DVD (NTSC, PAL or SECAM) of the film must be sent by Courier services (or regular mail), with no commercial value and with all taxes paid , to the following address:

  3. A selection committee will decide upon the entries.
  4. The producer or its legal representative must formalize the film entry.
  5. The prints of the selected films must arrive no later than October 1st., 2005.
  6. The films will be insured by the organizers from the moment the Festival receives the print from the transit agent to the moment the Festival hands it back to the transit agent for return to its owner.
  7. The prints must be sent to the address of the MOSTRA INTERNACIONAL DE CINEMA (see above).
  8. Please send the following promotional materials to the Festival until August 01: Synopsis of the Film, Three Press Books or Publicity, Three Stills of The Film, B/W Photo of the Director, Photos of the Leading Actors/Actresses, Biography and Filmography of the Director, Dialogue List (in English), Subtitles List (in English), Three Color Transparencies, Three Posters and one VHS or DVD of the film.

*all transportation costs and customs duties pertaining to the videos and the material sent for selection shall be on the producer and/or legal representative expenses.

**The São Paulo International Film Festival does not return the videocassettes sent for selection. It the participant would like to have the tape back, he should arrange the transportation and cover the costs.

NEW FILMMAKERS COMPETITION

  1. To be eligible for the COMPETITION section of the 29th. SÃO PAULO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, the film must meet the following conditions:
    • The film must be the first, second or third of the director
    • Produced after January 2004
    • 35mm, 16mm print or HDCAM
    • Running time must be no less than seventy (70) minutes.
    • Not previously shown in Brazil.
  2. International Personalities who have a genuine knowledge of film industry will be invited by the 29th. São Paulo International Film Festival to form the International Jury. No persons connected with the production or commercial exploitation of any films of this section will be allowed to serve on the Jury.
  3. The 29th. São Paulo International Film Festival will award the directors in accordance with the decision of the jury, with the Bandeira Paulista trophy, a flag of São Paulo stylized by the artist Tomie Ohtake.
  4. Those who are qualified according to the conditions of the regulation can apply to the New Filmmakers Competition sending a preview VHS* or DVD video cassete (NTSC, PAL or SECAM) of the film. The video must be sent by Courier services (or regular mail), with no commercial value, to the address of the Mostra Internacional de Cinema. The complete entry form, synopsis and full credit list are also requested. The deadline of the selection is August 01.

In the first week of the Festival – from 21 October to October 27 – all films by new directors will be shown at least once and then voted by the audience. In the second week of the Festival, the jury will select over the list of ten films scoring the highest votes from the public.
  8. The films will be insured by the organizers from the moment the Festival receives the print from the transit agent to the moment the Festival hands it back to the transit agent for returns to its owner.
  9. SPECIAL SCREENINGS
  1. The selection committee of the 29th SÃO PAULO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL will invite films to be presented on the section SPECIAL SCREENINGS. Those films, already recognized from other important festivals, will be presented during the two weeks of the Festival.
  2. The producer or its legal representative must formalize the film entry.
  3. The prints of the selected films must be sent to the address of the São Paulo International Film Festival and arrive no later than October 1 st , 2005.
  4. The films will be insured by the organizers from the moment the Festival receives the print from the transit agent to the moment the Festival hands it back to the transit agent for returns to its owner.
  5.
