Born in England, in 1954. After he graduated from the University of Hull, he began a career as script writer. In the eighties, he worked for TV, writing and editing series such as Grange Hill and The Storyteller. His first film in 1991, Tryly, Madly, Deeply was made in 1991. In 1996, he won an Oscar for best director for his film The English Patient.
