Regarded as one of the most important avant-garde Brazilian composers of the second half of the twentieth century, Gilberto Mendes brought with him to Brazil, in the sixties, a movement of renewal of world music begun in the late fifties by Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez in Europe and by John Cage in the United States. Mendes' most famous composition for choir, Beba Coca-Cola, to the words of the poem of the same name by Décio Pignatari, is also from the sixties. Santos Football Music, his own composition, was played for the first time in Poland in 1973. Filmed in Brazil, Germany, Belgium, Holland, and Russia, the documentary is a blend of interviews, international travel and historical compositions by the composer, today, aged 82.
