The owner of a pawn shop, Samuel Eneman collects bits and pieces and treasures that, at times, he will gaze at, by the light of a lantern: a violin, stuffed animals, an image of Christ. The darkness of his house is suddenly illuminated by the presence of young Tora, who has been given over to Eneman as warranty for a debt. This most unheard-of situation is the starting point for a process of humanizing for a man hardened over the course of decades by a merely commercial relationship with people. But Tora may not be as innocent as she seems.
