Manoel de Oliveira Retrospective
Aniki-bóbó (1942)
Portugal
The director's first feature. The story is set in the poorer districts of Porto, where the children grow up poor, free, and adventurous, but face every kind of problem of the adult world. Eduardito and Carlitos are rivals for the love of Teresinha - all of which leads to theft and to an accident, with a number of consequences. Aniki-Bóbó was regarded by French critic Georges Sadoul as a forerunner of neo-realism for its simplicity and dispossession. The title relates to a magic formula that, in children's games, allows them to define who are the police and who is the thief.
