Manoel de Oliveira Retrospective
A Caça (1963)
Portugal
Two boys are out, idly wandering about a swamp-infested region. They are pretending they are hunting, but have no rifles. They go deeper into a forest and lose sight of one another - until one of the boys finds the other again screaming for help, being pulled under in the quicksands. He runs in search of help and brings back a team of men to pull his friend out of the mire. They find the victim covered in mud, with only his head showing, and form a human chain to drag him out. The rescue team shout to him to stretch out one arm, only to find he has a hand missing. The director was two years and a half filming this masterpiece marked by a strongly surrealistic atmosphere that has been likened to the style adopted by Spanish film maker, Luís Buñuel. Shown at the Director's retrospective at the 15th Mostra.
