Manoel de Oliveira Retrospective
Abraham’s Valley (1993)
Portugal / France / Switzerland
A contemporary version of the classic Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. Emma, an exceptionally beautiful woman, weds Carlos Paiva, but does not love him. Obsessed by luxury, she manipulates the attraction she exerts over men, with different lovers to amuse her. This behavior earns her the name "Bovarinha". Filmed in the region of Douro, north of Portugal, the film broaches Flaubert's celebrated character psychologically and, also, explores the idea of androgyny. Here, the colors are an essential element, as is the voice off-stage that describes the emotions of the character. Awarded the Critics Prize at the 17th Mostra.
