Retrospectiva Alberto Cavalcanti

HERR PUNTILA AND HIS SERVANT MATTI (1955)

AUSTRIA

In this musical, a rich Finnish land-owner is generous, amusing, a companion and good when he is drunk. However, when sober, he becomes austere and cruel. His faithful servant must not only put up with the erratic temperament of his boss, but must also stand up for him when he is in trouble. Cavalcanti made the film in Austria, in 1955, by insistence of Joris Ivens who wanted to pass the directing on to him. Essentially a maker of documentaries. Ivens does not feel at ease directing professional actors and fictitious stories, let alone comedy. Brecht co-authored the script with Cavalcanti. This is the first film by the director in Europe after the Brazilian experience.
