Wong Kar Wai announces a new film with Nicole Kidman

Wong Kar Wai, the most renowned of all Asian film makers, who holds his audiences spellbound with the aesthetic wealth of his films and characters tinged with feelings of melancholy, would now seem to have opted for international production in preference to a base in Hong Kong: his new film "The Lady from Shanghai" will, for the first time, be spoken in English, with exceedingly beautiful Nicole Kidman in the main role.

All that is known for the time being is that the film is to be entitled "The Lady from Shanghai" - a mystery film (inspired by Orson Welles` noir classic?) with Nicole Kidman in the role of a dangerous, glamorous woman, in danger. Advance releases on Wong Kar Wai`s film describe "The Lady from Shanghai" as "seductive, erotic, and sensual, with secrets to be revealed only on screen".

The film was announced on the market at the 56th Berlin Film Festival by Franco-US Studio Canal film producers, with undisguised optimism. "This film will electrify audiences worldwide and sparkle on every continent as an encounter between the most highly acclaimed, innovating film maker in Asia and a most glamorous Class A Hollywood film star of luminescent beauty."

Even with all of the advance warranty to vouch for good international distribution, the next Cannes Film Festival with Wong Kar Wai as President of the Jury, will be the perfect setting to publicize "The Lady from Shanghai". We must only hope that the film maker`s sense of perfectionism will not mean he will take another three years to edit the film, as was the case with his last feature, "2046".
