Born and raised in Texas in the U.S. He began his career in the cinematographic industry working as a messenger for the small NYC company. At the same time, he wrote, directed, and produced a short film, The Hobbs Case (1979). He directed episodes from the TV series The X Files, Millenium, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under, and The Sopranos. He also directed the episode The Secret Life of Mary Margaret: Portrait of a Bulimic, of the Lifestories: Families in Crisis series (1992). Hollywoodland is his first feature and was the subject of much controversy at the 2006 Venice Festival, for awarding the Volpi Cup for Best Actor to Ben Affleck.
