Born in Mexico City, in Mexico, he began his career as a DJ in a radio broadcasters. With his first film, Amores Perros (selection for the 24th Mostra), he was awarded a number of prizes, amongst these the Grand Prix - Critics Week at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. In 2002, he was part of 11`09"01 - September 11 (selected for the 26th Mostra), a collective project on the terrorist attacks of September 2001 with a short film, Mexico. His second feature, 21 Grams, was made in 2003. Babel was awarded a Prize for Directing, Prize from the Ecumenical Jury, and a technical prize for Editor
