Born in 1951, in Siberia. He majored in history in 1974 and, later, studied at the VGIK, the famous Film Institute in Moscow and graduated in 1979. Through the influence of acknowledged filmmaker Andrei Tarkovski, he was employed by Lenfilm Studios, in 1980, which made it possible for him to make his first films, the majority censored by the Russian government. Only as from 1986, with the democratic reform, was the public able to see his films. Sokúrov became known in Brazil as from 1997, at the 21st Mostra that showed Mother and Son (1997). In 2002, the 26th Mostra included a complete retrospective of his work that showed eleven fiction features and twenty documentaries by the filmmaker, in addition to releasing a book, Aleksandr Sokúrov, in partnership with Cosac & Naify. His more recent films include Russian Ark (2006, 26th Mostra) and Father and Son (2003, 27th Mostra).
