Born in New York, in 1952. He has been fond of cinema since his student days when he was partner to Nicholas St. John in films made in Super 8. His first feature was The Driller Killer, of 1979, that earned him the title of `poet gangster of cinema` and became a cult movie. His filmography is marked by controversy with films such as King of New York (1990), his most popular success even today, Bad Lieutenant (1992, selection for the 16th Mostra), Dangerous Game (1993), The Addiction (1995), The Funeral (1996), and `R Xmas (2001).
