Competition - New Directors

Half Nelson (2006)

USA

Dan is a professor at a secondary school in a poor neighborhood in Brooklyn. His ideals wane in face of harsh reality, but he finds the energy to, in some shape or form, encourage teenage students to study the rights that were obtained through the Civil War. Dan rejects the standard curriculum of the school in favor of more provocative approaches and teaches his students to exchange work and think for themselves. Although Dan is brilliant, dynamic and exerts control over his class, in his leisure time, he is on the edge of consciousness. To face disillusion, he resorts to drugs and juggles between hangovers and work, in an endeavor to keep them as though they were separate lives. Until the day in which one of his problematical students, Drey, catches him under the influence of drugs after school. They start an unexpected friendship, in spite of the difference in age and of social conditions. Depending on how this relationship turns out, their lives may undergo change. The sound track is by the Broken-Social-Scene indie band, that also performed the music in the film Snow Cake, also selected for the 30th Mostra.
