NANNI MORETTI AT THE HEAD OF THE TURIN FILM FESTIVAL

Italian moviemaker Nanni Moretti took over the command of the Turin Film Festival in January, reinforcing the artistic and esthetic integrity of the contest.

Moretti, producer of great modern Italian movie classics such as ‘The Son’s Room’, shown at the 25th Mostra and ‘The Crocodile’, 30th Mostra, will define the next steps of one of the most respectable movie festivals in Europe. According to Luca Andreotti, program coordinator, the selection process will begin at the end of the month of March. The 25th edition of the event will take place between November 23rd and December 1st 2007.

The festival will remain faithful to the purpose of working as the stage for debate and exhibition of the contemporary cinema and its multiple aspects. Turin has become famous for making way for new cinematography and new moviemakers, awarding new works of artists like Hou Hsiao-hsien (‘Good Men, Good Women’, 19th Mostra), Chen Kaige (‘Farewell My Concubine’, the opening movie at the 17th Mostra), Amos Gitai (object of retrospective of the 28th Mostra), Tsai Ming-liang (‘The River’, 21st and 27th Mostras), David Gordon Green (‘Undertow’, 27th Mostra) and Lisandro Alonso (‘Los Muertos’, 28th Mostra).

The competitive sections – dedicated to the international cinema, independent productions and Italian documentaries – intend to display artistic creations which are characterized by intense formal and stylistic research. The sections outside the competition and the tributes clearly express the multiple points of view of the critics at the board of trustees. The idea is to select the most significant moments of this year’s movie production, regardless of geographical location or genre. Turin also carries a good reputation concerning rigorously organized retrospectives with quality copies accompanied by the books on which the movies were based. The retrospective that stood out was the one that focused on Nouvelle Vague in different countries in the 60s, observing many of the “New Cinemas”. In the 24th edition, last year, Turin paid tribute to Claude Chabraol from France (‘The Comedy of Power’, 30th Mostra), Joaquín Jordá from Spain and Robert Aldrich from America (‘Kiss Me Deadly’, 11th Mostra). These tributes also enabled the public to get in touch with veterans like Manoel de Oliveira, Aleksandr Sokúrov, Dario Argento and John Landis, among others.

This interaction between viewers and professionals of the cinema defines the vital force of the Turin Festival. For more information, access the official site www.torinofilmfest.com.br .
