Limite, by Mário Peixoto
RESTORED CLASSICS, THE SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS OF THE FESTIVAL
Fifty years after winning the special jury award in Cannes, the great master of Polish cinema Andrzej Wajda presents KANAL with a restored print. American actress Jane Fonda will be at the homage to her father Henry Fonda with the film by Sidney Lumet TWELVE ANGRY.
Three filmmakers will explain the effort for restoration by showing different films. Martin Scorsese will present the screening of TRANSES, by Morrocan Ahmed El Maanouri, from 1981, restored by the Cineteca di Bologna. Walter Salles introduces the classic LIMITE, by Mario Peixoto (Brazil, 1931), restored by the Cinemateca Brasileira, Video Filmes and Instituto Mario Peixoto. And Romanian Cristi Puiu will defend FOREST OF THE HANGED, by Liviu Ciulei, a Romanian resistance production from 1964.
The centenary of American actor John Wayne, the alter ego of filmmaker John Ford, will be recalled with HONDO, a film made in 1953, shot in 3D by John Farrow, and will be presented by the actor’s daughter-in-law, Gretchen Wayne. The homage goes on with the projection of the restored print of RIO BRAVO, by Howard Hawks, 1959.
Laurence Olivier’s centenary will also be remembered, with three of his acting and directing works in films adapted from William Shakespeare – HAMLET (1948), HENRY V (1944) and RICHARD III (1955).
