Florinda Bolkan
Born in Uruburetama in the state of Ceará, in 1941. She is a Brazilian actress living in Italy and one of the muses for the directors that made political cinema in Italy. She was part of Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (1970), by Elio Petri, one of the films in the Italian Political Cinema retrospective, in the 30th Mostra. Other films include: Candy (1968), by Christian Marquand; A Rather Complicated Girl (1968), by Damiano Damiani; Machine Gun McCain (1968), by Giulano Montaldo; The Damned (1969), by Luchino Visconti; and Crime Thief (1969) by Nadine Trintignant. She acted in several films and series for TV in Italy. In Brazil, she was in Bela Donna (1998), by Fábio Barreto, and director, scriptwriter, and producer of a feature Eu Não Conhecia Tururu (2000).
Wolfgang Becker
Born in Hemer, Germany, in 1954. Director and scriptwriter graduated in history and American studies by the Berlin Free University, he also studied at the German Academy of Film and Television and worked as assistant cameraman. Schmetterlinge, of 1987, his first film as director, was awarded the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival and was selected for the 18th Mostra. Other films: a children's drama Child’s Play (1992), also shown at the 18th Mostra; Celibidache (1992), a documentary; Life Is All You Get (1997), for which he was awarded Special Mention at the Berlin Film Festival, selected for the 21st Mostra; and Good Bye Lenin! (2003), his greatest international success, outstanding at the 27th Mostra and awarded the Blue Angel trophy at the Berlin Film Festival. He is also one of the directors of Bem-Vindo a São Paulo, a collective film dedicated to Abbas Kiarostami, presented at the 28th Mostra.
Jorge Sánchez
Born in Córdoba, Mexico, in 1950. Director of the Guadalajara International Film Festival and producer of several films by Mexican filmmakers such as Paul Leduc and Tomás Gutiérrez Alea - and, with greater regularity, Arturo Ripstein in films such as El Evangelio de las Maravillas (1998), No One Writes to the Colonel (1999, 23rd Mostra), Such Is Life (2000) and The Ruination of Life (2000, 24th Mostra). Sánchez founded and presided over the AMPI, the Mexican Association of Independent Producers and the FIPCA - Ibero-American Federation of Cinema and Audiovisual Producers. He was also one of the founders of distribution company Zafra-Cine Difusión, later named Zafra Vídeo y Cinematográfica Macondo that invests in Mexican independent cinema and in the new Latin-American cinema, in films such as the documentary ABC da Greve (1980), by Leon Hirszman, and Madame Satã (2002) by Karim Aïnouz. He also founded three film production companies: Macondo Cine Video, Amaranta, and Fitmania. He was Mexican Consul General in Rio de Janeiro for five years and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Latin-American New Cinema, presided by Gabriel García Márquez.
Bahman Gohbadi
Born in Bane, Iran, in 1969. As a student he worked at a local radio broadcasters and later joined a group of amateur filmmakers in Sanandaj. He moved to the capital to study cinema but dropped out of the course. Between 1995 and 1999, he directed ten short films that were awarded several prizes in local and international festivals, in particular a Special Prize from the Jury at the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival for Life in Fog (1999). He directed A Time for Drunken Horses (2000), winner of the Bandeira Paulista Trophy for Best Film according to the Jury of the 24th Mostra; Songs of My Motherland (2002), Bandeira Paulista Trophy at the 26th Mostra; Turtles Can Fly (2004, Special Mention of the Jury at the 28th Mostra); and Half Moon, selected for the 30th Mostra. As an actor, he was part of the film The Wind Will Carry Us (1999), by Abbas Kiarostami, shown at the 23rd and 28th Mostras.
Lauro Escorel
Born in Washington, USA, in 1950. The son of a diplomat, he is also brother of director and editor Eduardo Escorel. He began a career as director of photography in 1967, with a short film A Falência, by Rogério Duarte. He was assistant to two of the best professionals in photography in Cinema Novo, Dib Lutfi and Affonso Beato. He has worked with some of the most important filmmakers in the country such as Arnaldo Jabor (Toda Nudez Será Castigada, 1972), Ana Carolina (Mar de Rosas, 1977), Bruno Barreto (Amor Bandido,1978), Carlos Diegues (Bye Bye Brasil, 1979) and Leon Hirszman (Eles Não Usam Black-Tie, 1981, 18th Mostra). He has followed a good deal of the national and international career of Hector Babenco, from O Rei da Noite (1975) to Foolish Heart (1998). His most recent work includes Uma Vida em Segredo (2001), by Suzana Amaral, and Jogo Subterrâneo (2005), by Roberto Gervitz. He co-produced O Fio da Memória (1991), by Eduardo Coutinho. His was the photography in Ato de Violência (1980), the first film by his brother as director. As director himself, in Peru, Lauro made a short film Teatro de la Calle (1974) and, in Brazil, the documentaries Os Libertários (1976) and Arraes de Volta (1979), in addition to a feature Sonho Sem Fim (1985), for which he also wrote the script.
Contardo Calligaris
Born in Italy, in 1950. He is a psychoanalyst, Doctor in Clinical Psychology and essayist. He lives and works in both São Paulo and the U.S. He taught cultural studies at the New York New School and anthropology at Berkeley in California. As columnist for the Folha de São Paulo newspaper, he reflects on cinema, general culture, and modernity. These articles are gathered in a book Terra de Ninguém (Publifolha), latest release of a list that includes Crônicas do Individualismo Cotidiano (Ática), Hello Brasil (Escuta), and A Adolescência (Publifolha). His next book will be Cartas a um Jovem Terapeuta (Campus/Elsevier).
Jose Maria Prado
Born in Rábade, Spain, in 1952. He has a Bachelor's degree in interior design and, as from 1988, has been director of the Film Library in Spain, where he began work as programmer. He also worked as graphic designer and produced numerous radio programs. Between 1992 and 1999, he was on the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) and is part of the selection committee at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. He has also taken part in several international cinema conferences and his photographs have been exhibited in many art galleries.
