The Mostra, More Animated than Ever: know which feature cartoons have been selected for the 31st Mostra
The 31st Mostra has scheduled five animated feature films to please different types of audiences. The Belgian veteran Picha, who for 35 years has developed a career based on good humor and eroticism, comes to scene with his most recent work, the jeering Snow White, After the Wedding, where the traditional fairy tales are completely dismantled. In a differentiated animation ritual, the North-American David Kaplan works, in The Year of the Fish, on top of real images to achieve a floating pictorial effect. He adapts a medieval version of Cinderella’s story and brings it to nowadays New York Chinatown. For those who love Japanese animation, Stories from Terramar is a must that brings together a new generation of filmmakers – the debuting feature film director is Goro Miyazaki, son of master Hayao Miyazaki (of “Spirited Away”, shown at the 27th and 28th Mostra). It is a story about magical and powerful creatures and lands. The duo formed by Frenchman Vincent Paronnaud and by French-Iranian Marjane Satrapi brings to the screen the well-known cartoon strip romance, Persepolis, inspired on her autobiography, which fully delighted spectators and received the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. For a younger audience, the choice is the Brazilian cartoon Cosmic Boy, by Alê Abreu who also debuts in feature films, which depicts a futuristic story and relies on famous dubbing artists such as the late actor Raul Cortez and singers Arnaldo Antunes and Vanessa da Mata. To complement this program, the suggestion is the documentary Moebius Redux – A Life in Pictures, by the German Hasko Baumann, an audiovisual journey (with soundtrack by Karl Bartos, ex-Kraftwerk) about the work of legendary cartoonist Jean Giraud, or Moebius. And, to a certain extent, it also includes the film Ben X – The Final Phase, of the also debuting and Belgian Nic Balthazar, which has many scenes shot in cyber-space and with virtual actors.
