Daney today
The film critic Serge Daney (1944 - 1992) regarded film as a support to feed and consolidate a thought, with a great deal of poetic license and philosophical and psychoanalytical offshoots. To condense the existence of a cinematographical work into a minimalist concept of “liked it or didn’t like it” would seem to be blasphemy in light of the treatises that Daney reserved for the films of his life.
The films of our lives may be here. This is the motto we repeat every year in our radio ads. It’s in the plural, since nobody can live on just one emotion. And it is precisely this plurality that we seek each year, with the movies of the Mostra. The profusion of titles and filmmaking that we choose must complete this important mission of molding us and bringing us ideas and concepts that will superimpose themselves on everything we know. Movies that we’ve seen are like the pieces in the tetrix games that will fall into place in our minds, forming our values.
Trying to imagine how Daney’s mission to form opinions about movies would reach the present, we invited film critic Jean-Michel Frodon, editor of the French magazine “Cahiers du Cinéma”, to do this transposition work. Frodon quickly accepted the mission to imagine what DANEY’S thought would be TODAY. Based on the list of movies chosen for the 31st Mostra, Jean-Michel Frodon pointed to the following titles that Serge Daney would certainly have enjoyed seeing, defending and promoting:
