He was born in 1947 in the Guangdong province of China. He grew up in Taiwan, where he studied Cinema at the National Academy of Arts. His first feature was Cute Girls, in 1980. Dust in the Wind (1987) participated at the 11th Mostra. His body of work includes Daughter of the Nile (12th Mostra), A City of Sadness (1989), The Puppetmaster (1993), Good Men, Good Women (19th Mostra), Goodbye South, Goodbye (20th Mostra), and Flowers of Shanghai (22nd Mostra). He also directed Millennium Mambo (2001), Café Lumière (2004), and Three Times (2005).
