Jia Zhang-Ke Retrospective
the world (2004)
China
Tao lives out his fantasies at the World Park, in downtown Peking, a tourist site where visitors may view international monuments without ever having to leave town. A young dancer and her boyfriend perform in front of the replicas of the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower, and the Big Ben. Their relationship, however, is at a deadlock, for Tainsheg feels drawn to a beautiful designer Qun that he met on a trip. Meanwhile, young Xiaowei questions the future since her boyfriend Niu is irresponsible. All of these characters make up the portrait of a new generation bereft of any large-scale dreams and prospects. The feature won the Critics Award for best foreign film at the 29th Mostra
