THE FILMS IN COMPETITION AND MANY CANDIDATES TO BECOME CULT

Untitled Document Every year it is the same suspense. A silent war is fought in the backstage of cinematographic production, among the films submitted to the Cannes selection, the most expected of all in the calendar of more than 100 international festivals in the world. And the selection of the 61st Cannes Festival (14-25/ may/ 2008), with the films that will compete for the Golden Palm, was announced by Gilles Jacob, its president, and Thierry Frémaux, general delegate, on April 23, less than a month before the opening of the festival. Among the selected, the Belgian brothers Dardenne, who have already won twice in Cannes, the respectable veteran Clint Eastwood, and the cult from Canada (Atom Egoyan), from Brazil (Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas), from Germany (Wim Wenders) and from China (Jia Zhang-Ke). From the USA, three films have been chosen. From France, Italy and Argentina, two films each. These are the feature films that will be judged by a jury presided by American filmmaker, actor and writer Sean Penn:
