BLINDNESS OPENS FESTIVAL

Untitled Document After announcing 19 feature films in its competition list, the 61st Cannes Festival completed the row with three other names. Among them, the awaited BLINDNESS, by Brazilian Fernando Meirelles, also named as the opening film in Cannes. Meirelles’ film, with an international cast composed by Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover, Gael García Bernal, Yoshino Kimura and Yasuke Iseya, and the Brazilian Plinio Soares, Alice Braga and Antonio Abujamra, promotes the second cinematographic adaptation of a book by José Saramago. The previous was directed by Dutch George Sluizer with
THE STONERAFT, in 2002 (26th Mostra selection).

The two other films to complete the selection of candidates to the Golden Palm are the French ENTRE LES MURS, by Laurent Cantet, and TWO LOVER, by American James Gray.

The parallel session Un Certain Regard will be opened by the British HUNGER, by debutant filmmaker Steve McQueen. The film follows the last six weeks of life of the IRA terrorist Bobby Sands, in hunger strike.

Cannes also completed the Golden Palm jury list. Under the presidency of Sean Penn, there will be the French actress Jeanne Balibar and the Iranian author and director Maniane Satrapi (from PERSEPOLIS). For the closing evening, when the awards of the Cannes Festival will be granted, the actor and director Robert de Niro has confirmed his presence. He also acts in the film set aside for the May 25 evening – JUST HAPPENED, by Barry Levinson – besides Bruce Willis, Robin Wright Penn, John Turturro and Sean Penn.
