FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES RECORD NUMBER OF SUBSCRIPTIONS
Cannes had an 11% increase in the subscriptions for the 2008 festival, coming from 96 countries. There were 1792 feature films, against 1615 in 2007. On the other hand, there has been a 6% decrease in the subscription of short films: 2233 shorts in 2008, from 80 countries, against 2368 in 2007. Other statistics in Cannes announce 55 films in world premiere, nine from debutant directors and ten directors for the first time in the competition.
Back to the official Cannes selection, here are the 20 films chosen to the parallel section UN CERTAIN REGARD, which also has a jury, presided by German filmmaker Fatih Akin, that will award the ones it finds best:

TOKYO!, fable in segments about the Japanese city, with directions
by Korean Joon Ho Bong and by the French Leos Carax and Michel Gondry
