THE INTELLIGENT MARKETING OF A NEW CAMERA
The formula was perfect marketing during the 61st Cannes Festival. The recently
released digital video camera Flip Video, available in the American market,
in association with the French production company Celluloid Dreams, created
a parallel competition of films at Cannes.
Each of the short films’ directors present was presented with one mini-camera
and the proposal of making a new short, of three minutes maximum, in three days.
For the jury of the ‘Flip Competition’, which had a good ten-thousand-dollar
award, Celluloid invited directors of international festivals present in Cannes.
105 shorts were made. The 21 chosen for the final were seen and judged in a
meeting of the directors of the Berlim, Locarno, Carlovy Vary, New York, Toronto
and São Paulo festivals.
The mini-camera serves a new generation of internet users. It records up to
30 minutes, 1 GB memory and 640 x 480 pixels VGA resolution. The most interesting
in its versatility is the possibility of easy and immediate internet connection.
The uninanimously chosen winner was the short THE FLIP TRIP, by Vincenzo Cosentino,
an intelligent and well-humored animation about the birth of a new star that
goes to Cannes for the first time: the Flip camera itself. The competitors and
the winners can be seen at the site http://www.theauteurs.com/competitions/1
