EGOYAN, DERANGING WITH ‘ADORATION’

Untitled Document

ADORATION, by Canadian Atom Egoyan, was one of the highlights of the competition at the 61st Cannes Festival. Egoyan creates expectations with his always deranged cinema, using cultural traditions that challenge whatever can be displacing. He is one of the filmmakers who always stand out in the Cannes constellation. And he deserves so. Egoyan builds dense films, rich and inventive, full of humanity. He preserves family values and always put them above the misleading modern fetishes.

In ADORATION, we follow a teenager who wins instant fame thanks to internet. Mysteriously stimulated by his French and drama teacher, a Lebanese immigrant who lost her parents in civil war, the student creates a horrifying story about terrorism. In his imagination, his father would be a terrorist who used his pregnant wife to enter with an explosive in an airplane heading to Israel with 400 passengers on board.
Actually, the teenager lost his parents in a car accident and is raised by the uncle, the mother’s brother, a virtuosi violinist. But the made up story reaches the net and provokes indignant reactions around the world. It gets even more provoking when the boy starts discussing the fundaments and motives that drive people to perform extremist acts. The modern resources of making one immediately noticed through internet, with telephone digital cameras and other easy-to-use resources, such as the computer itself, re-starts the debate about the September 11 attacks.

The teacher loses her job for stimulating the student in going so far with his story. But she has a secret that drives them so close. We will only learn it at the end of the film, what makes the confrontations more exciting. She is played by the excellent actress Arsinée Khanjian, the director’s wife and main collaborator. She is Egoyan’s fundament and always gives track to his films. The couple is considered to be one of the most creative in Canadian cinema and ADORATION was one of the best seen during the whole festival.
