POLITICAL FILMS ARE THE AWARDS HIGHLIGHTS

Untitled Document

And France won the Golden Palm again after a long 21-year wait. It went to the touching film ENTRE LES MURS/ THE CLASS, by Laurent Cantet, about 8th grade students in a public school in Paris. Cantet was inspired by the homonymous book by François Bégaudeau, who acts as teacher of 24 teenagers followed in their conflicts within the limits of the classroom. Many times we have the impression we are watching a documentary. But the realism about tolerance and hope, the importance of education and culture for the good intellectual formation of the youngsters, sends a universal message, passionate and very moving. It also sends a good political message and leaves the hope that it will be seen by young audiences. The last Golden Palm to a French film had been for SOUS LE SOLEIL DE SATAN, by Maurice Pialat.

The great surprise was the best actress award to Brazilian Sandra Corveloni, a theater actress in her debut in the cinema in the film LINHA DE PASSE, by Daniela Thomas and Walter Salles. She plays the courage-mother and symbolizes the sad struggle of Brazilian mothers to raise children without fathers. The award to Sandra Corveloni gives the film a new breath and enriches it with new emotional interpretations. The award was expected, at least for the Jornal da Mostra

The best actor award was confirmed to Mexican Benicio del Toro in the great CHE, by Steven Soderbergh. The grand prix of the jury presided by Sean Penn was granted to Italian GOMORRA, by Matteo Garrone, a tense and hectic film about the tentacles of the Neapolitan mafia. With an eye on the damages it causes in society and its poor youngsters. Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan got the best director award for the dense ÜÇ MAYMUN/ THREE MONKEYS. Another jury award went to another Italian – IL DIVO, by Paolo Sorrentino, dedicated to the fascinating political career of Giulio Andreotti. Finally, the best screenplay award put more light on the new work by the very celebrated Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. This time for the nervous LE SILENCE DE LORNA, about human traffic and clandestine immigrants in the new European community.
