MANOEL DE OLIVEIRA OPENS FESTIVAL
WITH A BRAZILIAN SHORT PRODUCED BY MOSTRA

The Brazilian short film FROM VISIBLE TO INVISIBLE, directed by Portuguese master Manoel de Oliveira and produced by the São Paulo International Film Festival, was chosen to open the 65th Venice Festival, on August 27. The film, produced by Renata de Almeida and Leon Cakoff, the Mostra directors, also brings Leon Cakoff as an actor, besides Portuguese Ricardo Trepa.

FROM VISIBLE TO INVISIBLE is part of the feature film INVISIBLE WORLD, an ongoing project by the São Paulo International Film Festival in partnership with Gullane Filmes and Oficinas Querô. The project started from an original idea by Sergio Groisman about invisibility situations in the world today. Just like it happened in the previous episodic feature produced by the Mostra, WELCOME TO SÃO PAULO, several international directors will be invited to complete the project with their input.

The argument and the screenplay of the short FROM VISIBLE TO INVISIBLE were originally written by Manoel de Oliveira himself, the active filmmaker with all the energy of his almost 100 years, to be celebrated next December. The film deals with irony and fine humor with the casual meeting of two friends on Paulista Avenue, the heart of the city of São Paulo. One is Portuguese, passing by Brazil, and the other is Brazilian. They try to talk, but either one or the other’s cell phone rings, preventing them from carrying on with the conversation. They finally decide to phone one another so that they can communicate. They talk of life, of ethics, of love, of friendship, and of times today, surrounded by the unceasing pace of the city, with cars and people that cannot ever stop. This segment is part of the feature work in progress INVISIBLE WORLD.

Master Oliveira is able to synthesize in seven minutes the whole irony of the modern world, served by sophisticated communication paraphernalia. And that, besides all the communication we have achieved, it is of little help in correcting the paths of the world.

The same opening night of the 65th Venice Festival will be followed by the new American feature BURN AFTER READING, a dark-humor comedy about a CIA’s agent which secret identity is discovered. The feature was written, produced and directed by the brothers Ethan and Joel Coen, with George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, Richard Jenkins and Brad Pitt in the cast. The 65th Venice Festival will go on until September 6, when the winners of its traditional Golden Lions will be announced.
