OLIVEIRA`S SHORT GATHERS COMPLIMENTS AT THE FESTIVAL
The short movie FROM VISIBLE TO INVISIBLE, directed by Manoel de Oliveira, chosen for the opening night of the 65th Venice Festival, became an instant world success, accumulating compliments all over the Mostra. Here are some of them, especially from the Italian press:
“Bellissimo corto” (Ciak magazine, Italy)
“The almost-centenary director opens the festival with lightness in a short about the communication difficulty” (Corriere de la Sera, Italy).
“Fast as an Oliveira`s short had never been, completely immerse in our time” (La Repubblica, Laura Putti, Italy).
“De Oliveira`s short pleases all – Applauses for the clever short FROM VISIBLE TO INVISIBLE” (Il Messaggero, Italy).
“Ovation to Oliveira with the sardonic short that gives the tone of the festival at its opening” (Le Monde, Thomas Sotinel, France).
“About Manoel de Oliveira`s short – gracious and dense – everything one says is little” (ABC, Rodríguez Marchante, Spain).
“Manoel de Oliveira goes back to the future. The almost centenary filmmaker, always freer, more inspired and lighter, sets in São Paulo, Brasil, the most envied metropolis at the lusophone rival power, FROM VISIBLE TO INVISIBLE, a short leaflet about the lethal desease of our western civilization, unable to communicate unless tied, masochisiticaly controlled and paying to Tim for the small primary pleasure of conversation... What a cosmopolitan touch, what a necessary cultural breath this one by the filmmaker from Oporto, in such a dangerously obsessive world...” (Il Manifesto, Roberto Silvestri, Italy).
“Manoel de Oliveira`s short precedes the opening film with a deep, but light, thought, of a non copiable grace” (La Stampa, Lietta Tornabuoni, Italy).
“At almost 100, Manoel de Oliveira still shows vigor and lucidity to cause envy to the ones at 40. Even more with the ironic and poisonous short film FROM VISIBLE TO INVISIBLE, which opened the Mostra before the Coens` feature” (Il Gazzettino, Chiara Pavan, Italy).
“An esplendid and simple allegoric parable about incommunicability in modern world, the short film reflects in a direct manner about how strong human loneliness is, in a time when technological communication allows reaching anyone anywhere. A small sample in seven minutes about what the film INVISIBLE WORLD is going to be, already announcing to be a master piece.” (Drammaturgia.it, Marco Luceri, Italy).
The feature film INVISIBLE WORLD is a São Paulo International Film Festival production and will be made by several international directors. Master Manoel de Oliveira`s FROM VISIBLE TO INVISIBLE was the first one to be concluded to be part of the project.
