4- CUSCUZ CLAN  THE MAKING OF

Versão em Português

UpToDate - Did you have all the freedom you wanted to record CusCuz Clan?

Chico Cesar - There's always boundaries because it's a matter of recording. Usually the new artist wants to record ten albuns at the same breath and have all the stuff into there as well. I've recorded the songs I really wanted to record, with the band I chose, my band. The second album was born in a concert, so to speak. A concert with this band called CusCuz Clan I played with many times. So I just took the package of songs and came into the studio. Some special participations are there from suggestions by me, such as Herbert Vianna (from Paralamas do Sucesso) or Ramiro Mussoto, that programmed all electronic sample drums.

Chico César and Mazzola

Mazzola also came upon as producer, partner and a guy searching for that sound's excellence that I've wanted to have but I didn't know how to find it out. I am not able to manage that studio language. For that, Mazzola was an excellent partner in the sense of giving me enough freedom and helping me get rid of my musical vices. As well as in the sense of putting limits on my ideas. But all the musical conception and arrangements are mine. It ended up an album all over me. Certainly it wouldn't be that way if I was supposed to record it under a small musical company agreement.

Both Lenine (great Brazilian new singer-composer) and Lanny Gordin played in my two albums. So this second one is an extension of the first one. In this latest one I've had Naná Vasconcelos, Alceu Valença, Elba Ramalho, Bakithi Kumalo, Ramiro, André Abujamra e Renata Arruda.

UpToDate - One thing on the album that attracts much attention is the high quality of ambience and mixing voices...

Chico Cesar - Mazzola is a production master, indeed.

UpToDate - Would you consider working with him again?

Chico Cesar - Certainly. I guess that partnership will go on with good results.

UpToDate - Is he a musician as well?

Chico Cesar - He plays piano. He did some backing vocals in the album. I know that when he was a boy he used to sing with a vocal group called Meninos de Petrópolis (Boys from Petropólis  a Rio city), or was it Canarinhos de Petrópolis, or something like that. Maybe it's because he cares a lot about the voices when he's recording. I should say I've won a producer and a new friend as well.
