6- FROM THE FIRST TO THE SECOND ALBUM

Versão em Português

UpToDate - How would you compare the first and second album?

Chico Cesar - The first one is a live concert with voice and acoustic guitar. It's much more introspective and intimate. On the other hand, the second one is pretty expansive. These are the basic comparisons. Furthermore, things that are just suggested on the first one, such the swing of "Mama África", "Tambores" (Drums) and "Benazir", are fully presented in the second one. I should say that Cuscuz Clan brings the dance stuff and intimacy is of secondary importance.

UpToDate - How did you come up with the idea of bringing so many people to do a backing vocal on the first and happy track called "Folia de Príncipe"(The Prince's Revelry)? (a pun on Folia de Reis, The King's Revelry - a popular festivity from Brazil's Northeastern and Centre-South regions)

Chico Cesar - Yeah... There's even Zuza Homem de Mello. (One of the most dynamic Brazilian producers). Well, there was one particular thing which used to happen on the recording sessions of albuns in the Seventies. On the album's credits, they used to include even those who just prepared coffee. As it turned out, there was always at least one track with a bunch of pals singing something usually for fun and friendship. It is the audience in "Folia de Príncipe" who goes on replying with / ai, ai.../ Then I've wanted to have that vigorous street atmosphere. How to do that? Bringing on the people. So I invited some twelve-year-long-friends and others that I've just met there and they also brought their friends as well. We crowded the studio and, man, it was pretty cool.
